Projects for the Missouri Center for Career Education (MCCE):

 

 

Concentrating on Reality Education (C.O.R.E.)

CCSS Professional Development Program for CTE Educators

Sponsorship provided by the University of Central Missouri (UCM)

 

Services provided:

Served as lead consultant, instructional designer, and sole writer/content developer on a large, research-based professional development program that offers tools and training for career and technical educators to align their curriculum with the new Common Core State Standards (Math and ELA). This university project began with facilitating a two-day task force to assess user needs and then to create a one-day workshop and diverse online tools geared to those needs.

 

Deliverables included:

  • Designing branding for the program (logo, colors, fonts)

  • Developing instructional design for one-day workshop that teaches a repeatable process for aligning current CTE curriculum with CCSS and enhancing unit plans for more comprehensive collaboration with Math and ELA core teachers

  • Writing/designing all workshop content and print/online instructional materials (including PowerPoint slides and scripts, planner tool and simulation samples, and handouts and exercises)

  • Creating concept design and content for online tools (interactive CTE cross-curricular samples, textual/visual glossaries for ELA and Math CCSS terminology, cross-reference tools for developing enhanced lesson plans, at-a-glance CCSS summaries)

  • Helping facilitate two pilot workshops through observation and reporting role as well as assisting with one-on-one participant support during exercises and simulations

  • Creating three Webinars on special topics related to the program: (1) Developing CCSS Key Questions: Translating Standards for Use in CTE Classrooms; (2) English Language Arts in the CTE Classroom: Finding Common Themes for Aligning Instruction; (3) Reality Writing: Facilitating and Assessing Student Writing Assignments in the CTE Classroom

 

 

 

Model Curriculum Projects

Services provided:

Served as editors and information design consultants for development of model curriculum templates for use throughout Missouri's career and technical education programs for construction trades, agriculture, and guidance counseling. "Cross-walked" curriculum lesson plans/activities to the English Language Arts (ELA) standards in the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

 

Deliverables included:

  • 126 model curriculum unit plans and accompanying lessons/assessments for secondary construction and agriculture classes

  • 87 unit plans for elementary and secondary guidance instruction

  • 200 "cross-walked" guidance curriculum lesson plans/activities to align with the CCSS ELA  standards.

 

 

 

Pre-professional Teacher Practicum Course

Services Provided:

Writing, editing, form design, desktop publishing for online resource for school districts to use in setting up this practicum experience for senior high students interested in pursuing a career in education. The practicum combines classroom learning for participants on diverse aspects of educational theory and practice as well as teaching assistant experience in elementary and middle school classrooms.

 

Deliverables included:

Desktop published course materials, including manual/workbook, handouts, and forms

 

 

FENCE Manual Content/Organizational Audit

Funding provided by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS)

 

Services provided:

Reviewed manual content for needed revisions, including out-of-date material, organizational changes, referencing and citation gaps, and other content/style changes necessary for accuracy, readability, and usability. Created proposal presentation slides, examples, and handouts; supported MCCE effort at DHSS proposal meeting.

 

Deliverables included:

  • PowerPoint presentation

  • Manual organization usability analysis

  • Revised manual section combining information from two existing sections to reduce redundancy and enhance readability

  • Scope descriptions and estimating for proposed revision/update project

 

 

Career Pathways for the Construction Trades

Services provided:

Consulting, research, original writing, editing, graphics development, and desktop publishing for resource packet designed for school districts either establishing a new local or regional construction career and technical education program or enhancing an existing program.

  • Manual components for program administrators, students, and teachers

  • Appendices (resources, knowledge and skills documents, glossary)

 

 

Transportation Career Education Modules

Services Provided:

Style guide authoring and editing for diverse Career Cluster professional development resources authorized by the U.S. Department of Transportation to raise awareness among secondary school students of career opportunities in the transportation industry.

 

Deliverables included:

  • Style guide based on DOT sample

  • Edited content written by five different instructors to infuse consistency in format and voice among different courses.

 

 

Project Management Consulting for Professional Development Projects

Services Provided:

Consulting with client management and creative staff to refine internal project management processes for projects involving diverse subject matter experts; developing tools for managing complex publication projects.

  • Written processes for various project scenarios

  • Role definitions and hierarchies

Furthering Education for Nurses who Care for the Elderly (FENCE) Manual

Funding provided by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services

 

Services provided:

Structural editing, proofreading, and desktop publishing for a training and reference manual developed for nursing staff working in long-term care settings. Project involved developing the manual design and template for layout, photo/graphic management and design for maximum comprehension, editing manual content for consistent voice among nine contributors, editing chapter reviews for consistency with online assessments, developing a usable glossary, and creating an APA-compliant reference list from 150+ supplied references (including researching complete citations and validating Internet sources).

 

Deliverables included:

  • Edited and desktop published 52-chapter, 500-page long-term care nursing manual

  • Edited test questions for online testing database

  • Graphics library

  • Validated, APA reference list based on 150+ citations

 

 

 

Shaping the World of Public Works Secondary School Outreach Education Program

American Public Works Association (www.apwa.net)

 

Services provided:

Project consultant, writer, instructional and information designer for creating a toolkit for APWA member chapters in the US and Canada to use for developing outreach programs promoting careers in public works among high school students. The project began with facilitating a two-day task force meeting with public works directors throughout the U.S. to conduct needs assessments and develop program strategy. Following the task force meeting, development continued over a two-year period and culminated in pilot validation workshops in local high schools.

 

Deliverables included:

Innovative program management ideas, step-by-step instructions, templates, forms, and other support materials to create awareness and enhance understanding of public works activities and career options among secondary school students throughout the US and Canada. Materials developed are suitable for use with both secondary schools and community groups and include:

  • Shaping the World of Public Works Guide to Secondary School Outreach — This 75-page resource provides information about outreach in the school setting, with the community at-large, and in the APWA member workplace. Included is a 50-minute lesson plan that introduces students to public works and career opportunities that might fit with students' individual skills and interests.

  • Handout and Resources CD-ROM — This companion CD-ROM contains all of the templates, forms, and other materials referenced in the Guide.

  • Shaping the World of Public Works Career Booklet — A 24-page, full-color, informational booklet on public works careers.

  • Top 100 Public Works Careers CD-ROM — This features 100 public works careers and individual fact sheets about each career as well as at-a-glance charts that group these 100 careers by academic requirements and other factors.

  • I Am Public Works DVD — This fast-paced, edgy video helps viewers define "public works" and understand the diverse and exciting career opportunities available. Included in the Guide is instructor notes for facilitating student discussions following viewing.

  • Shaping the World of Public Works Poster — Full-color poster depicting various public works careers.

Services Provided:

Working with a team of curriculum designers, we wrote, edited, and designed a Career Clusters Toolkit for educator professional development to be offered as online self-study or at conferences and workshops. Course modules included: (1) Understanding the Career Clusters Framework; (2) Infusing Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships in Academic and Career Education; (3) Facilitating Successful Student Transitions; (4) Integrating Career and Academic Education.

 

Deliverables included:

Written, designed, and desktop published materials for four, self-paced modules as follows:

  • Participant notebooks

  • Workshop presentations

  • Leaders guides

  • Participant evaluations

 

 

 

Missouri Personal Finance Assessment Pilot User Guide

Services Provided:

Editing, writing, and developing flow charts for a personal finance secondary school program, including the system overview and administration, setting up the system in a school district, organizing and managing testing sessions, and accessing test score information.

 

Deliverables included:

  • User manual text for school IT administrator setup and use
